November 20th, Ceasefire Now
City Clerk Alex Geourntas,
I urge the City of Cambridge to support Policy Order #3, joining billions of people across
faiths, classes, genders, sexual orientations, and countries of origin in Cambridge and
worldwide calling for a ceasefire to save as many lives as possible.
The constant killing of Palestinians in Gaza at the hands of Israel has been going on for 44
days now. As of this morning, the known death toll in Palestine is 13,215 with at least 5,500
being children, and over 200 of those having been murdered in the West Bank. And these
numbers are already out of date as I write this. Calling for a ceasefire to end this genocide is
the bare minimum that local govenerments must do. Every day that our supposed leaders do
not call for a ceasefire is another day of death and destruction of hundreds of Palestinian
people.
On October 20th, a Data for Progress poll found that 66% of voters "strongly agree" or
"somewhat agree" with the US leveraging its close diplomatic relationship with Israel to
prevent further civilian death by calling for a ceasefire and de-escalation of violence in Gaza.
On October 26th, 120 nations in the United Nations General Assembly voted for a resolution
calling for an immediate humanitarian truce and for the provision of lifesaving supplies into
Palestine. Only 14 countries voted against the resolution.
Providence City Council as well as two cities in California have already passed resolutions in
support of the Congressional ceasefire resolution. Somerville, Detroit, Raleigh, and other
cities are considering similar resolutions. Thank you for your consideration!
