Policy Order O-13

City Council, April 4, 2005

Councillor Maher, Councillor Davis, Vice Mayor Decker, Councillor Galluccio, Councillor Murphy, Councillor Reeves, Councillor Simmons, Mayor Sullivan, Councillor Toomey

WHEREAS: This day the Cambridge City Council honors William J. Budryk; and

WHEREAS: William was born in the Cambridge Hospital on September 30, 1939, to Rosalie (Medeiros) and Peter Budryk, Sr.; and

WHEREAS: William attended St. Hedwigs Grammar School in East Cambridge; in 1957 he graduated from Cambridge High and Latin School, where he was unanimously elected captain of the football team; and

WHEREAS: William enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1958; he served in the Marines for five years and left with the rank of Non Commissioned Officer of the 5th Grade Sergeant; and

WHEREAS: While he was in the Marine Corps, William  served in "Force Recon," the predecessor to the Navy Seals and Special Forces.  Their role was to scout and possibly engage enemy forces well in advance of any potential U.S. military action; and

WHEREAS: William was involved in combat in the Belgian Congo in the early 1960's, and he took part in training Taiwanese special forces and was ashore with them on mainland China.  His other deployments included service in the Carribean and the Mediterranean , Africa and Greece; and

WHEREAS: After William left the Marines, he worked for U.P.S., and for his brother's business.  He also continued work that utilized the strength and outdoor survival skills he learned in the Marines:  he worked for Wilderness House as a canoe and kayak instructor and he assisted in Alaskan trips with Arctic Outfitters.  Realizing a lifelong dream, William opened his Oakwood Lodge, where he spends much of his time and where he has led hunting, fishing and kayak trips since 1989; and

WHEREAS: William is also an avid and expert amateur American historian with a specialization in the area of Polish involvement in the American Revolution, as well as an award-winning painter of wildlife and landscapes that have been exhibited in venues in Boston, Cambridge and Maine; and

WHEREAS: William  is the father of William J. Budryk, Jr. and Deborah Slade, and the grandfather of Dana, Sean and Christopher Holmes; and

WHEREAS: The City of Cambridge is proud of and grateful for the military service of its citizens; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the City Council go on record dedicating the corner of Spring Street and Seventh Street as

RESOLVED: That the City Clerk be and hereby is requested to prepare a suitably engrossed copy for presentation at the Dedication Ceremony on September 17, 2005 on behalf of the entire City Council.
