City Council, June 9, 2003

Mayor Sullivan, Vice Mayor Davis, Councillor Decker, Councillor Galluccio, Councillor Maher, Councillor Murphy, Councillor Reeves, Councillor Simmons, Councillor Toomey

WHEREAS: It has come to the attention of the City Council that on May 18, 2004, William and Bernard Goldberg will be celebrating their 75

WHEREAS: William and Bernard are the sons of Mosier B. and Sarah Z. Goldberg, and the brothers of Agnes Goldberg and Bernyce Neitlich; and

WHEREAS: William and Bernard attended the Longfellow School and were Bar Mitzvahed at the Temple Ashkenaz; and

WHEREAS: William and Bernard were affectionately known around Cambridge as “The Twins;” and

WHEREAS: William and Bernard graduated from the Cambridge High and Latin School in 1946; and

WHEREAS: William graduated from Harvard College in 1950, the same year Bernard graduated from Tufts University; and

WHEREAS: Bernard and William graduated from Boston University Law School in 1953, and

WHEREAS: The Goldberg Twins have been advising Cantabrigians for what is now half a century, many of whom came here to Cambridge to build new lives for their families; and

WHEREAS: Bernard became active in local politics, when he was elected to the Cambridge City Council in 1960; and

WHEREAS: Bernard served him community with pride for five consecutive terms, resulting in ten years of dedicated service to the City and its residents; and

WHEREAS: William, in addition to his law practice, served on the Board of Investment for the CambridgePort Savings Bank; and

WHEREAS: William and Bernard have been fixtures in the in the Cambridge Community for what is now 75 years; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That this City Council go on record wishing William and Bernard Goldberg a very Happy 75

RESOLVED: That this City Council go on record dedicating the corner of Western Avenue and Green Street as William and Bernard Goldberg Square, and proclaim Saturday, May 15, 2004 as William and Bernard Goldberg Day in the City of Cambridge

RESOLVED: That the City Clerk be and hereby is requested to prepare a suitably engrossed copy of this resolution for presentation to William and Bernard Goldberg on behalf of the entire City Council.
