City Council, September 24, 2012

Councillor Decker, Mayor Davis, Councillor Maher, Councillor Reeves, Vice Mayor Simmons, Councillor Toomey, Councillor vanBeuzekom

WHEREAS: Part of the mission of the Election Commission is to ensure that no voter is faced with barriers to casting their vote and that every reasonable accommodation is made to ensure that all voters have access; and

WHEREAS: On September 6, 2012, the elevators at the Baldwin School were reported to be out of order in the early morning.  The elevators were not fixed until later in the afternoon; and

WHEREAS: There were no registration tables or voting booths relocated to the first floor for the elderly or disabled voters who were not able to use the stairs; now therefore be it

ORDERED: That the City Manager be and hereby is requested to confer with the Election Commission to report back to the City Council on what alternate arrangements were made, if any, to ensure that the elderly or disabled voters were able to vote, why there were no signs posted detailing alternative methods for voting and why no election booth was brought to the first floor; and be it further

ORDERED: That the City Manager be and hereby is requested to instruct the Election Commission to look into the issue of accessibility at the King Open on Cambridge Street in a timely period; and be it further

ORDERED: That the City Manager be and hereby is requested to report back to the City Council on this matter.
