Hi Stephen, I was given your contact information when I visited the Traffic office yesterday. I own 61 Winter St #2 and have since November 2018. Over the past two years, I have tried multiple times, unsuccessfully, to speak with someone in the department who can help me with my driveway. I'm hoping that you are that person. The executive summary of my situation is that the existing curb cut does not extend through the width of my driveway -- short by about 5 feet -- and I simply need the curb cut for those extra few feet. 61 Winter St is a 2-unit condo with 2 tandem parking spaces. The driveway is roughly 30 feet long and 20 feet wide. There are existing "no parking" driveway clearance signs on either side of the driveway. Unit 2 (my unit) has exclusive rights to "parking 2" in the plan below, and I have attached the full plan PDF as well.
Being that these are tandem spaces, I must be able to enter and exit the driveway more or less straight on because immediately adjacent to "parking 2" are a building on one side and "parking 1" -- which often has 2 cars parked in it -- on the other side. The two main impediments to being able to fully utilize my driveway are the height of the curb (for safety and car clearance purposes) and, in particular, cars parked beyond the drive clearance signs and blocking the driveway only where the curb is not cut. I spoke with a Cambridge police officer about the situation, and he advised me that -- while the signage is clear and enforceable -- people are naturally going to park where the curb cut ends (and it covers less than half the width of "parking 2"). He further stated that my best course of action is to extend the curb cut to prevent this tendency. I am also attaching a set of pictures that I took yesterday and this morning. The pictures without a car blocking the driveway were taken immediately before I visited 344 Broadway yesterday afternoon; the pictures showing the BMW parked in front of my driveway was a few hours later; and the picture showing the Mini parked in front of my driveway was when I woke up this morning. This is a never ending problem for me, and the solution is to reduce the curb height over a span of 5 feet. To date I have been unable to locate anyone who could or would help me move forward with the curb cutting process. I will pay for whatever expenses. I'll contact whoever I need to contact. I just would please like this problem to go away, and I need guidance. The curb cut application asks for a lot of things that I don't know how to answer and I am not requesting any new driveway space.
Thank you, Alex Nocella

It looks like the house might have been renovated and the driveway widened, without actually applying for any permits to alter the access to the driveway. The maximum width of a curb cut in a residential district is 20ft, however we typically encourage owners to use a single standard 10ft driveway apron and have it flare to 2 cars wide on the property. Most new curb cuts are approved in this manner. Please let me know if you have any additional questions.
