Declare April 2, 2016 as Autism Awareness Day in the City of Cambridge

City of Cambridge R-2 IN CITY COUNCIL March 14, 2016 MAYOR SIMMONS WHEREAS: In 2008, the United Nations General Assembly designated April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day, to be observed on that date every year from that point going forward; and WHEREAS: As part of the effort to raise awareness, the United Nations invited all Member States, relevant organizations of the United Nations, and organizations throughout the public and private sectors to observe World Autism Awareness Day in an appropriate manner; and WHEREAS: The City of Cambridge has proudly observed Autism Awareness Day on April 2 in years past, as part of the effort to move beyond awareness and into acceptance of those with Autism; and WHEREAS: As in years past, the Mayor's Office and the Fletcher-Maynard Academy have coordinated their efforts to recognize Cambridge students and citizens with Autism on this day; and WHEREAS: In 2016, the City will continue to commemorate the occasion by joining an international movement to illuminate historic monuments and buildings in blue by lighting up Cambridge City Hall at 6:45 pm on March 31; now therefore be it RESOLVED: That the City Council go on record declaring April 2, 2016 as Autism Awareness Day in the City of Cambridge; and be it further RESOLVED: That the City Clerk be and is hereby requested to forward suitably engrossed copies of this resolution to Susan Gurry, Chairperson of the Cambridge Autism Awareness Day Committee, and to Robin Harris, Principal of the Fletcher-Maynard Academy, on behalf of the entire City Council.
