City of Cambridge Department of Public Works Owen O'Riordan, Commissioner 147 Hampshire Street Cambridge, MA 02139 theworks@cambridgema.gov Voice: [phone removed] TDD: [phone removed] July 15, 2016 To: Richard C. Rossi City Manager From: Katherine F. Watkins City Engineer Re: Awaiting Report 16-40, dated April 25, 2016 – Regarding sidewalks along Huron Avenue As part of construction projects, the City is committed to providing accessible facilities that include improvements to pedestrian safety and comfort, especially in cases where sidewalks are missing. In 2007, work was completed on Huron Avenue that included traffic calming features as well as constructing sections of new sidewalk where none previously existed. This included approximately 1,000 feet of sidewalk from Grove Street to 700 Huron Avenue as well as sidewalks from Park Avenue to Aberdeen Avenue. These improvements provided a continuous sidewalk along the southern side of Huron Avenue, which did not previously exist, and new crosswalks connecting to key destinations on the northern side of Huron Avenue. There is not work currently planned for Huron Avenue between Fresh Pond Parkway and Grove Street, but the remaining missing pieces of sidewalk (see graphic) will be prioritized as future opportunities arise. These would need to be developed through a community design process, as additional sidewalks would likely impact the Fresh Pond Reservation, on-street parking and other uses of the public right-of-way. All changes within the Fresh Pond Reservation require approval of the Cambridge Water Board.
