City of Cambridge Department of Public Works Katherine F. Watkins, Commissioner 147 Hampshire Street Cambridge, MA 02139 theworks@cambridgema.gov Voice: [phone removed] TDD: [phone removed] January 13, 2025 To: Yi-An Huang City Manager From: James Wilcox City Engineer Re: Request for Naming of New Way – South William Way I have received a request from the owners of the Pearl William Condominium for the naming and creation of a private way to access the entrances of the condominium units. The Pearl William Condominium is comprised of four buildings containing five residential units. When the Condominium was originally developed three units were assigned street addresses on Pearl Street. Based on the configuration of the buildings, the entrances of the units with Pearl Street addresses face the Condominium common access area and not Pearl Street. This has caused confusion with deliveries and could impact other services such as emergency response. The Emergency Communications Department, the Historical Commission and the Traffic Department have reviewed the request. Each of the departments is supportive of the proposed name. Under Cambridge Regulation, 12.04, Cambridge City Council is the responsible authority for altering street names. 12.04.010 - Street names affirmed—Changes and new designations The several streets in the City shall continue to be called by the names heretofore given to them, until such names are altered by the City Council. The City Council, subject to any provisions of law relative thereto, shall give names to all streets hereafter laid out and may change the name of a street at any time, except that no street shall be given the designation of any existing street, and no street shall be accepted so long as the name thereof is the same as that of any existing street. I therefore recommend that the requested street name be placed before the City Council for their consideration. Please let me know if you have any questions or would like any additional information regarding this request.
City Manager – Letter To the Honorable, the City Council: Please find attached a recommendation received from City Engineer James Wilcox to name new private way, South William Way. Under the Cambridge Municipal Code, Chapter 12.40, the City Council is the authority to alter street names. Adoption of the attached order is recommended. Sincerely, Yi-An Huang City Manager City Manager Order ORDERED: That the City Council go on record authorizing that South William way be named, per the attached plan. ORDERED: That the Cambridge Post Master be immediately notified of the change.
