Please accept the zoning amendment petition attached hereto sponsored by the William
Noyes Webster Foundation, Inc. ("The Foundation"), a Massachusetts Registered
Marijuana Dispensary ("RMD") operator to amend the provisions of the Medical
Marijuana District Section 20.700 of the Cambridge Zoning Ordinance and Map.
The enclosed petition satisfies the original factors that were the basis for the
establishment of the original two Medical Marijuana Overlay Districts in 2013. Industry
B-2 District, which includes 29 Smith Place, and contiguous to the existing MMD-1
boundary. It is a district that allows commercial uses. There is the availability regional
transportation with MBTA bus service on Concord Ave, near the intersection of Concord
Ave and Smith Place and the MBTA Alewife Red Line Station a short distance away,
with The Foundation utilizing the shuttle service that it would provide to and from
Alewife Station. The location of the proposed location will meet the public safety
concerns with the security that The Foundation will utilize, as well as the fact that the
Cambridge Police Substation and Professional Ambulance are located on the property.
The location is consistent with the urban character and the site is buffered from schools
or other facilities with child-oriented programs. Further, there are no residential
properties that abut or nearby the 29 Smith Place.
The Foundation and petitioning voters of the City of Cambridge sincerely appreciate the
time and effort of the City Council in considering the enclosed petition. Please do not
hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, comments and/or concerns.
