Melissa Peters | Assistant City Manager for Community Development Sandra Clarke | Chief of Administration & Operations 344 Broadway Cambridge, MA 02139 [phone removed] cddat344@cambridgema.gov www.cambridgema.gov/CDD To: Yi-An Huang, City Manager From: Melissa Peters, Assistant City Manager for Community Development Date: July 31, 2025 Re: Response to Policy Order 2025 #63 Re: Public Meeting Spaces The above-referenced policy order asks staff to “…assemble a list of public and private spaces available to the public, indoors and outdoors, noting contact information and any associated requirements, ensuring that there are public meeting places identified in each neighborhood.” As noted in the policy order, public meeting spaces are essential to building and maintaining social capital. Having space to gather with friends and neighbors helps residents establish connections that benefit our community’s health and wellbeing. The City of Cambridge recognizes the value and importance of public space, and there are a few ways the City leverages its role as a landowner and regulator to provide the essential service of spaces for community members to gather. To prepare this response, the Community Development Department (CDD) staff coordinated with colleagues in Department of Human Service Programs (DHSP), Cambridge Public Library (CPL), and Cambridge Public Schools (CPS) and our community partners to collect information on publicly accessible spaces, both publicly and privately owned and indoor and outdoor. Public spaces include municipal buildings, such as libraries, schools, youth centers, and senior centers, and public parks and open spaces. Privately owned, publicly accessible spaces include indoor and outdoor spaces managed by community-based organizations, religious institutions, and private companies that provide this amenity as a public service or requirement through zoning or other regulatory agreement. Staff assembled the following list of publicly accessible spaces that includes information on: location and neighborhood; contact information and/or process for reserving space; and cost to use the facility. It is important to note that spaces identified on this list have varying availability due to programming needs of the primary user, popularity, and staff capacity. The management entities also have different reservation systems and requirements. The purpose of this list is to make the information available to community members for securing space based on their preferences. We recognize this is not a complete list and see this as a working document that will get updated over time. CDD will post this information on the City’s website, and provide periodic reviews and updates.

Community Development Department staff is currently collaborating with Cambridge Redevelopment Authority staff to assemble a comprehensive list of these spaces with an accompanying map. 2 For the purpose of this response, we have assembled a shortlist of parks that is not a comprehensive list of all Cambridge’s parks and open spaces. We focused on those with group seating, only listing up to two places per neighborhood. There are several neighborhoods with multiple comfortable outdoor gathering places, and other neighborhoods aren’t believed to have any. To be included in this list, the space must have at least one table with three or more seats. In neighborhoods where multiple parks meet these criteria, we’ve listed parks with larger tables, or multiple tables close enough to each other that they could feasibly be used together. For a comprehensive list of city parks, see Parks and Playgrounds - City of Cambridge or Find It Cambridge.
