A communication transmitted from Yi-An Huang, City Manager, regarding proposed parking fine increases

CMA 2025 #301·Council meeting Dec 15, 2025·1 page·📄 Original PDF (city portal)
To: Yi-An Huang, City Manager From: Brooke McKenna, Commissioner Date: December 11, 2025 Subject: Increase in Expired Meter and Overtime Violation Fines Effective February 1, 2026, we are proposing an increase in the fines associated with Expired Meter and Overtime parking tickets. The proposed fine for each violation will go from $30 to $40. We revisit the cost of our parking violations regularly to ensure that they continue to reinforce positive parking behavior. Enforcing meters and time limit restrictions ensures that we have turnover in our parking spaces, supporting businesses and providing parking for as many residents and visitors as possible. The increase in fine revenue from this change will also support the important work we are undertaking to make our streets safer and plan for the transportation challenges we will face in coming years. We last increased fines for these violations in 2019, from $25 to $30. In addition to supporting our transportation and parking policies, this price increase will bring us in line with fines for these violations in Boston and still below the fine amounts in Somerville.
