"OMMISSION

To: Mayor Marc McGovern and Members of the City Council
From: Charles Sullivan, Executive Director
Re: 40 Cottage Street
At its meeting on March 1 the Historical Commission reviewed the letter that Roy Russell and
Robin Chase submitted to the Council on February 21.
Mr. Russell and Ms. Chase objected to the designation of 40 Cottage Street as a landmark but
suggested that "if necessary, we would be happy to agree to consult with the Historical
Commission when making fundamental changes to our home, with the understanding that
maintenance, repairs, and modifications are constantly necessary to meet the changing needs of
life in the 21s century."
The Commission still supports landmark designation as the best means of protecting this
significant building for the long term, but the members expressed their appreciation for the
owners' commitment to preserving their home. They authorized the staff of the Historical
Commission to undertake any such requested review.
The Commission also asked me to communicate their appreciation to the City Council for the
time it has devoted to this issue.
