PROJECT
Sculptural lighting for Palmer Street - inspired by the play of free-form
contour line drawing.
Continuous lines of light trace gentle loops, improvised curves and
swirls, supported within a net matrix. This installation is created using
a new type of full color RGB chip LED light source embedded in a
flexible weatherproof silicone extrusion. Color adjustments within
individual lines may be made manually with a wireless remote. Color
variations may be selected to mark special occasions, or shift
seasonally.
The diffused LED sources of the installation produce enough lumens
to provide an overspill of color light creating a glow against adjacent
brick walls. The artwork is centrally positioned at the dark mid-point
of Palmer Street, drawing the eye, and the viewer, in from both Church
and Brattle Streets.
At this time no automatic programming is planned. One can imagine a
system with complicated sequences and patterns, driven by micro-
processor controls, and at a much greater cost for fixtures, electronics
and software.
However, the intent of this project is to engage the space with light in
a surprising yet gentle and calm way, rather than with flashy whiz-
bang graphics.
The hope is for the artwork to be discovered as a delightful moment
within a drab alleyway. Sometimes as foreground, at other moments
becoming part of the background. Something to be enjoyed and lived
with on a daily basis.
Original study of 3 potential locations. (shown for location, not specific design)
The issue here is that the sites at Church Street and close to Brattle Street require
coordination with different owners (other than the Coop). In addition the building
facades will not safely support cable attachments, and/or do not provide sufficient
height for mounting above required roadway clearance dimensions.
Preferred installation location, under the skybridge.
In this location power is available, and both sides are under Coop ownership.
However, new cable attachment points are needed at each side. The existing
single point eye bolts are rusting, improperly installed, and do not provide any
safety loop back-up.
