To the Honorable, the City Council:
I am pleased to report the home rule petition relative to the city's Inman Square Intersection
Improvement plan was recently enacted by the legislature and signed into law by the Governor. A copy of
the signed parchment is attached to this email. Thank you to the legislature's Joint Committee on
Municipalities and Regional Government and to my colleague Senator Sal DiDomenico for working with
me to advance this petition over the course of the past two months.
As an avid cyclist and frequent patron of Inman Square businesses, and as someone who enjoys the
Vellucci Community Plaza, I recognize the urgent need to protect our city's tree canopy and improve
safety for all users. Over the course of the past year, I have met on several occasions with a number of
interested constituents and advocates on all sides of this issue. I have encouraged all interested parties to
make their voices heard at Cambridge City Hall, as I believe the city council is the legislative body best
positioned to render a decision on a local land use matter such as this.
Moving forward, I will continue to encourage all residents and concerned parties to work with city
officials to consider the best possible way to implement the Inman Square improvements. My hope is that
the city will continue to consider refinements to the plan while working to mitigate its impact on our
local businesses and tree canopy. We can look to the recent efforts made by Harvard University at the
Smith Campus Center as an example of how trees can be replaced in a robust fashion following a
construction project.
As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns about this or any other
matter, and thank you for all that you do for our city.
Yours in service,
Mike Connolly
