Dear City Councillors,
We the undersigned, Inman Square business owners and managers are writing to express our
strong opposition to the City's Current plan for the redesign of Inman Square. We are asking
that instead of moving ahead with the Traffic Departments Current Plan, the City take a serious
look at the Modified Plan that so many citizens of Cambridge are endorsing. Of all the options
the City has presented to date, the Current plan is by far the most disruptive to our businesses
in the short and long terms.
Construction is projected to last least 24 months and more likely 3 years. This will have a
significant negative impact on the health of Inman Sq businesses as well as quality of life for
residents over an extended period. The plan to bend Hampshire Street through Vellucci Park
involves significant curb reconfigurations, major utility re-alignments, the destruction of Vellucci
Park as well as construction of a new retail plaza. It will mean considerable loss of parking
permanently. We have already lost half of the parking along Cambridge Street. In addition there
will be a loss of spaces for truck loading and handicap parking.
Movements in and through the Square will be disrupted and dangerous throughout the extended
construction period. As experience from other recent construction projects across the city
shows, such mayhem will have an enormous negative impact on our businesses. Our
customers will choose other places to shop, dine, and receive services during that lengthy
period, and many will not return if we are still in operation.
We business owners believe that we are important to the Inman Square community. Many of us
have served the community for decades. Some of us serve people who do not speak
English, and others who depend on us to bring services to them. Many of our clients are elderly
or frail. Some of us have only recently established places for people to gather to dine, work and
learn and learn together. We want to stayand thrive here. We believe that all of us are vital to our
community.
We have taken a good look at the Modified Plan for Inman Square and believe that it is superior
to the Current Plan in a number of ways.
The layout is less complicated, resulting in shorter construction time and lower construction
costs. So It will be far less disruptive to local businesses, residents and commuters during
construction.
All 9 parking spaces along Vellucci Plaza are retained.
Vellucci Park will be saved. Twelve trees in Vellucci Park and along Cambridge Street will be
saved.
Respectfully,
MIChaEl REPPUCCI

Dear Mr. DePasquale, Cambridge City Manager,
We the undersigned, Inman Square business owners and managers, are writing to
express our strong opposition to the City's "Current " plan for the redesign of Inman
Square. Of all the options the City has presented to date, the "current" plan is by far the
most disruptive to our businesses, both in the short and long terms.
Construction is projected to last at least 24 months and likely 36 months. This will
negatively impact the health of Inman Square businesses and residents' quality of life
over an extended period. We believe the 6 million dollars estimated to execute this plan
could be put to better use for the citizens of Cambridge.
The plan to bend Hampshire Street through Vellucci Park involves significant curb
re-configurations, major utility re-alignments, the destruction of Vellucci Park as well as
construction of a new plaza, and loss of considerable parking. Parking for our
customers is critical for our business' viability. In addition there will be a loss of spaces
for truck loading and handicap parking. Movements in and through the square will be
disrupted and dangerous throughout the construction period. As experience from other
recent construction projects from the city shows, such mayhem is likely to have an
enormous negative impact on our businesses.
We ask that the City come back with a design that is less costly and less complicated
and which avoids the many detrimental impacts to businesses and to the community.
The way forward needs to function well for all affected constituencies. We realize that
designing such a plan is challenging, but it is important for all of us that we get it right.

Modified
Councilors Carlone, Devereux, Kelley, Mallon, McGovern, Siddiqui, Simmons, Toomey and
Plan
Zondervan,
79 people have signed a petition on Action Network telling you to Petition to Support the Modified
Here is the petition they signed:
We, the undersigned, support the Modified* Plan for Inman Square over the Current Plan, for
the following reasons:
1. The Modified Plan is far less disruptive to local businesses, residents and
commuters.
2. It does not encroach on Alfred E. Vellucci Community Plaza, which is
Article 97- designated land.
3. The plan increases rather than decreases the amount of overall public open
space as it retains the existing park and also creates an 'East Plaza.'
4. There is no net loss of pedestrian space; existing sidewalk widths are retained,
rather than reduced.
5. Cyclists are fully protected throughout the intersection.
6. Bicycle lanes are at street, rather than sidewalk level. This minimizes potential
conflict points between cyclists and pedestrians.
7. Mature trees are protected. These include the six 50-year-old honeylocust trees
in Vellucci Plaza and the trees in front of Inman Pharmacy, as well as those in
front of Urgent Care and the former Quik Mart.
8. Driveways to the Cambridge Health Alliance, Moona Restaurant and NAVEO
Credit Union are more straightforward and maneuverable.
9. All 9 parking spaces along the edges of Vellucci Plaza are retained.
10. This plan has no negative impacts on residential abutters.
11. The layout is less complicated, resulting in a shorter construction timeline and
lower construction costs.
* The proposed Modified Plan is based on the City's Current Plan. The main difference
between the two is that in the Modified plan, the Hampshire Street bend is moved in an
easterly direction. The Modified Plan has been developed and vetted with three reputable
traffic engineers who are familiar with the Inman Square Intersection.
We believe that the Modified Plan, with the Hampshire Street bend moved in an easterly
direction, is preferable to the Current Plan. It is safer for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists
and preserves the existing neighborhood park, while providing open space east of Hampshire
Street. We therefore ask the City Council and City Manager to thoroughly evaluate and
consider the Modified Plan as an alternative that avoids the impacts of the Current Plan as
listed above.

I work at MIT and often pass through Inman Square as a pedestrian. Velluci Plaza with its mature
shade trees is a priceless resource tor this urban neighborhood.
Urban planning should always place premier priority on preserving healthy mature shade trees. The
long term survival of substitute trees is a gamble these days, and it can take many years for
replacement trees to match the extraordinary services existing mature shade trees provide via their
canopies, their root systems, and the many psychological benefits big healthy urban shade trees
grace us with.
Please adopt the Modified Plan for Inman Square, which along with many other carefully considered
benificial design features, preserves these invaluable shade trees.

I support the modified plan over the current plan for Inman Square. My overall preference is to leave
the square as is, with better signage and small bike lane mods (l am a cyclist). We also need to be
aware that Union Square will be a construction nightmare over the same time period, so adding more
road work simultaneously is asking for area wide gridlock - not very bright.

Inamn Square needs a park. BY making Velucci Square into towo small areas you will destroy the
whole idea of a park and you will remove trees!! NO! Please allow INman to have a real park with a
group of trees.
40. Maggie Booz (ZIP code: 02138)
The trees in Vellucci Plaza, as if knowing about the commotion concerning them, have thrived,
grown, and filled out this season. As Co-Chair of the Cambridge Committee on Public Planting, 1 am
thoroughly opposed to the City's proposed Inman Square changes and very much in support of this
compromise plan that saves those trees and also saves a public plaza NOT bordered by a truck
entrance.

right - is deeply upsetting. Please pass these modifications.

50. Joanne Nelson (ZIP code: 02141)
If we lose the battle let's chain ourselves to the trees.
51. Robert McCarthy (ZIP code: 02138)
I support the Modified Plan for Inman Sq. It looks just as effective and costs less. If you remove the
honey locust trees and the others, you will create a hostile, hot environment for the Square. If you do
remove the trees, you need to replace them with sizable older trees than the street trees the city
forester has been planting. Just look at the trees the Boston Public Library planted in front of their
main library in Copley after the renovation of the Johnson Building. They chose fully mature and
sizable trees which enhance the neighborhood.

63. Sophus Reinert (ZIP code: 02138)
64. Susan Ringler (ZIP code: 02139)
Large shade trees are way more valuable to our health and well-being than most people realize.
When you cut down large trees you lose their cumulative benefits for at least 20 years. We cannot
afford to do this with climate change looming large. Please save Velucci Park and its trees.
65. Steve Wineman (ZIP code: 02139)
66. Percy Tzelnic (ZIP code: 02138)
Hopefully the councillors will not turn a deaf ear -- as they usually do - to the expressed desire of the
Cantabrigians.

Petition
City Manager Louis A. DePasquale City of Cambridge,
285 people have signed a petition on Action Network telling you to Green Cambridge Initiates Petition
on Inman Square Redesign.
Here is the petition they signed:
Dear Mr. DePasquale:
We are writing because we believe that the City's proposed redesign of the Inman Square
intersection can be moditied to improve the environment of the Inman Square neighborhood
as well as increase safety for bicyclists. The current design meets the latter objective but
would make the Square less livable for its residents, less pleasant for its neighbors and less
inviting for those who visit or pass through.
The undersigned residents, property owners, neighbors and friends of Inman Square are
united in our desire to preserve Vellucci Park and save the trees in the Park and in Inman
Square.
Its central location serves and shades the entire intersection as opposed to favoring a single
location. We are requesting that you meet with a delegation of signers to hear our concerns
and discuss alternative solutions before current plans are finalized and construction
commences.
Some of our concerns with the current Bend Hampshire option are as follows:
_ Vellucci Park will be greatly downsized, removing approximately 4,000 st of open space to
allow for Hampshire Street to be rerouted through it; the docking station for Hubway will be
relocated to the middle of what is left of the park; and a new plaza will be constructed on the
north side of Hampshire Street.
_ Four 50-year old honey locust trees and other street trees will be removed, likely
compromising the viability of the two honey locust trees in Vellucci Park that are not removed
and expanding a heat island from the Cambridge-Prospect-Hampshire Street triangle
westward to the heart of Inman Square.
_ Residents who live in the buildings that abut Vellucci Park, at 240-258 Hampshire Street and
1423, 1427 and 1429 Cambridge Street, would be adversely impacted. Their concerns are
described in an attached letter signed by many of these residents.
_ Other concerns include preserving the historical significance of Vellucci Park and ine cost
and disruption of constructing the present preferred plan, which requires relocating major
underground utilities.
We support a redesign of Vellucci Park that retains the six large trees that define it.
Some of us have participated in the community, neighborhood and stakeholder meetings
about the Inman Square redesign since June 2016 and the fatal accident that added urgency
to this projeci. We recognize that the focus of these meetings has been on the difficult
challenge of moving vehicular, bicycle and foot traffic safely and smoothly through a complex
intersection.
Our concerns, the environment and livability of the Inman Square neighborhood, have so far
received far too little consideration.
We ask that you and your staff take another look at different solutions with these issues in
mind. It should be possible to accomplish the City's transportation safety goals without
compromising community assets that cannot be replaced and everyone will miss.
Sincerely,
The Undersigned

I support redesigning Inman Square, but in a way that preserves the Square's trees and maintains the
existing open space available to residents, workers and visitors alike. We needn't think of our needs
as conflicting, but complimentary. Bike safety is essential, as is preserving our urban forest. Both are
related health/wellness concerns that should be equally considered through the redesign process,
and hopefully through its outcomes. Thank you for your time and consideration.

project have been
My misgivings about Cambridge's proposed Inman Square "Improvements"
growing in leaps and bounds the more that I learn about the planned implementations. Earlier this fall,
there was the "surprise" removal of 37 trees, most of them mature and healthy, from Beacon Street as
part of a Somerville construction project. Now we have flawed bike-lane implementations on Brattle
and part of Cambridge Street in Cambridge, which are hurting local businesses and creating safety
and parking challenges for too many. Time to put the brakes on projects being rammed through by
city planners and to engage in thoughtful deliberation, adverse-impact studies, and better
responsiveness to community concerns.

The City has been taking too much liberty making changes to neighborhoods without working hard
enough to get the input from neighbors. It seems only to talk to the "side" it wants to listen to.
I know the downside of not having my voice heard about changes in my neighborhood. Please
complete your due diligence and talk to neighbors, even if it means going door-to-door. There are
many who won't see this email. Don't leave them out.

I've worked in Cambridge for some time and have always found Vellucci Park to be a welcome retreat
from the traffic and noise of this busy city. Trees are so important and businesses should know that
trees increase business, reduce pollution, give us fresh oxygen- in what is becoming a more and
more crowded area of the city, and so many more gifts. Trees have been here longer than we have as

If there's a way to address the transportation needs AND maximize the green space and protect
mature trees, that would be a win-win! Trees & green space work for all by absorbing storm water,
cleaning air & cooling the environment - all of which are badly needed in urban areas. Proximity to
green space & trees makes people healthier & happier too. Please try to accommodate both the
transportation needs and the environment.

According to the Cambridge City's own tree report, condition can be a very subjective criteria. As an
Earthwatch volunteer myself, I saw how difficult it was for the volunteers who submitted data to the
Cambridge database to determine whether the condition was poor, fair or good. many factors, such
as bark wound, may not affect the total productive life of the tree, despite the odds of urban tree
survival.
DEVELOPMENT
Tree removal for the sake of development ease is an outrageous demand on our public coffers. Even
if the developer pays for the very large expense of removing large trees and replanting high
maintenance smaller diameter trees, the economic, social, environmental benefits of the large pear
trees are 70 x the environmental benefits of a new tree with a small diameter.
In Cambridge: 28.7 million gallons of storm water runoff is mitigated by our Cambridge trees. Large
trees and their root systems are most beneficial for this purpose; 171,500 pounds of air pollutants a
year are mitigated by our trees, offsetting the damage from 5.2 million vehicle miles. It is ironic that
while the number of cars and development pollutants are increasing, are most hardworking trees are
being removed.
LOSS
Callery Pear trees, as well as Norway Maples, which have three season interest and yield a beautiful,
long lasting canopy in Cambridge, are in the top 5 or so species of trees in Cambridge and have been
removed at an alarming rate. These are now viewed as pariahs for various reasons that are not
clearly relevant to Cambridge.
The dwindling numbers of mature trees will have a high impact on our environmental and social
benefits. Street trees of 25" or more DBH are now only 7% of the total street tree population.

configuration of the intersection.

I have lived in Inman Sq as a homeowner for 12 years and love Vellucci Park. I cannot see how the
new plan is going to provide the same amount of "green space" that currently exists.
Are the trees that are going to be added in front of the CHA going to be the same size of the trees you
are going to remove? Or are small saplings that provide no shade or sense of a true park going to be
put in planters on the concrete?
This will be a heartbreaking loss to our neighborhood if the plan is carried out as the city has
proposed. I highly oppose the current design in favor of Green Cambridge's alternative plan.

The existing changes on Cambridge Street--the street itself feels "drunk" as you weave around the 7
curly turns-is bad enough. And there are several places along there where the visibility and layout is
such that there might as well be a sign asking pedestrians and cyclists and even drivers: "Would you
like to get killed here?" or "Would you rather go down the street by the High School and get hit by the
giant bus that should have a sign saying 'Head on Collision coming.' "

The city planners have already made it a logical nightmare on Cambridge st with the bike lanes and
the removal of parking spaces especially the handicap ones that seniors and people with disabilities
used to make it easier for them to be more independent and feel like there a part of society. When you
are driving you can not see the traffic signs written on the street there under the cars in front of you so
people don't know what lane they should be in. Also how's this going to work when it snows and all
the directions are covered. I was born and raised in this city and have never seen a project done so
fast with little input from the residence and owners of properties that all this has effected negatively it
was done fast before people knew what was happening intentionally. This has made driving and
walking more dangerous for everyone I could go on. Also this park was dedicated to Mr Vellucci who
was an important part of Cambridge's and it's history removing this park is a slap in the face of his
importance to Cambridge and what has made Cambridge such a great place. Let's stop the madness
