Communicating Highlights from School Committee Meeting September 25, 2018
To the Honorable, the City Council:
Please find the below highlights from Tuesday, September 25th Regular School Committee Meeting. The goal of these
highlights is to increase communication and awareness across the two elected bodies. We appreciate your feedback on
improving this medium.
•
1:1 Technology: SY18-19 CRLS rollout of a 1:1 technology program providing a Chromebook to each student in 9th -
12th grades.
o 1:1 technology initiative is part of CPSD strategic objective to provide equity and access to increase
opportunity and achievement.
o Public comment and school committee discussion on use of device, Wi-Fi access, and filters at CRLS.
o CRLS administration and ICTS representatives provided background and scope of current efforts and goals.
•
Dynamic Diversity Development: SY 17-18 Teacher Staffing Update on program to recruit, hire, and retain a CPS
workforce that reflects the diversity of Cambridge
o Goal: 30% Teachers of Color by Fall 2020, Current Status: 23% Teachers of Color as of December 2017.
▪
Four schools currently exceeding 30% goal, with four others gaining traction ranging currently from
25-29% Teachers of Color.
o Students gain substantial academic, social and other educational benefits when provided with diverse
educators and role models.
o Progress made in SY 17-18 includes: inclusive job descriptions, employee resource groups, diversity
dashboard and anti-bias training for admin council.
•
Equity & Access: Motions aimed to amplify and further CPSD progress on this strategic objective. More information
on this initiative can be found here: https://www.cpsd.us/cms/One.aspx?portalId=3042869&pageId=68617311
o School Committee adopts statement and definitions on equity and racial equity.
o CPSD statement as well as equity and racial equity definitions to accompany student outcome data on
dashboard and be shared broadly with the community.
o Superintendent to explore a CPSD data dashboard tour, visiting each school community to be in conversation
with members of the community to promote understanding of data and engage in collaborative next steps. The
tour is in alignment with work being done through The Building Equity Bridges grant awarded to the
Cambridge Public Schools (CPS) and the Cambridge Education Association (CEA) by the Nellie Mae
Education Foundation.
Respectfully,
Marc C. McGovern
The Mayor’s office shares the goal of creating regular joint City Council - School Committee meetings to
collaborate and support highlighting need to work together on larger issues that impact our students, families and
larger Cambridge community. For an official record, members should continue to refer to minutes prepared by
the Executive Secretary to the School Committee. School Committee summaries represent information that the
Mayor’s Office deems relevant for both bodies, and may not include all actions taken by the School Committee. If
you read anything in these communications that you would like to know more about, please reach out to
Educational Liaison Elizabeth Liss (eliss@cambridgema.gov).
