City of Cambridge O-8 ORIGINAL ORDER IN CITY COUNCIL January 28, 2019 COUNCILLOR TOOMEY COUNCILLOR KELLEY WHEREAS: On April 30, 2018 the City Council voted to explore the possibility of creating the “Cambridge Publicly Financed Municipal Election Program” and the “Cambridge Municipal Election People’s Pledge” and it was referred to the Government Operations/Rules and Claims committee; and WHEREAS: On November 14, 2018 during the Government Claims and Operations Committee meeting about the proposals, the following motion was passed: • That the City Manager be and hereby is requested to instruct the City Solicitor, in consultation with the Election Commission, to report back on the legality and constitutionality of the attached proposal submitted in the April 30, 2018, Policy Order; said proposal amended to read such candidates would agree not to accept donations from persons residing outside the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or outside of Cambridge, Massachusetts which was adopted by the City Council on December 3, 2018 as Policy Order # 15; and WHEREAS: To date, the City Council has not received the report back from the City Solicitor and the Election Commission; now therefore be it ORDERED: That the City Manager be and hereby is requested to instruct the City Solicitor, in consultation with the Election Commission, to provide this report no later than the February 4, 2019 City Council meeting.
