Dear Council Members:
I am writing to respectfully request your permission to hang banners to celebrate
and publicize the upcoming Cambridge Science Festival. The banners would be
hung during the week of March 18, 2019 and be taken down the week of April 22,
The request includes:
• Two 3' x 20' street banner to be hung across Massachusetts Avenue
on the City's existing wires at (1) Norfolk Street and (2) JFK Street in
Harvard Square.
• Thirty-eight 24" x 36" banners to be hung on poles in Harvard
Square.
• Eighty-eight 30" x 60" street pole banners to be hung on poles along
Massachusetts Avenue, from Vassar Street to Harvard Square.
• Ten 30" x 60" street pole banners to be hung on poles along
Broadway, from Ellery Street to Felton Street.
• Ten 30" x 60" street pole banners to be hung on poles on Cambridge
Street, from Trowbridge Street to Hovey Street.
• Forty- one 30" × 60" street banners to be hung on poles in Kendall
Square. Broadway, from the old Red Cross to Third St.- 5 poles;
Main St., Ames to Broadway (and 2 on Broadway), 19 poles, M70,
M68, M36, M32, M30, M28, 18, 20, M21, M23, M25, M64, M35,
M37, M39, M43, M49, M55, M59; Ames St., Main to Broadway, 8
poles, M54, M53, M44, M42, M41, 2, 4, 6, ; Broadway, Ames to
Main at the Marriott, 9 poles, M30, M26, M22, M18, M16, M8, M6,
and M4.
All banners will be double sided so that they will look the same from both
sides. Enclosed are the designs for the street banner and the pole banners. If
you have questions or need additional information, please don't hesitate to

The Cambridge Historical Commission hereby certifies, pursuant to
Chapter 2.78, Article III of the Code of the City of Cambridge and
order establishing the Harvard Square Conservation District, that the
work described below does not involve any activity requiring issuance
of a Certificate of Appropriateness or Hardship:

Install temporary banners on light poles in 38 locations as
plans submitted by Brenda M. Blais titled "Harvard Square 1" and
"Harvard Square Area 2," submitted on January 11, 2018. Banners
shall be displayed between March 19, 2019 and April 22, 2019.
All improvements shall be carried out as shown on the plans and
specifications submitted by the applicant, except as modified above.
Approved plans and specifications are incorporated by reference into
this certificate.
This certificate is granted upon the condition that the work
authorized herein is commenced within six months after the date of
issuance. If the work authorized by this certificate is not commenced
within six months after the date of issuance or if such work is
suspended in significant part for a period of one year after the time
the work is commenced, such certificate shall expire and be of no
further effect; provided that, for cause, one or more extensions of
time for periods not exceeding six months each may be allowed in
writing by the Chair.
