Good Evening
My name is Robert Travers, Jr. I reside at 54 Fulkerson Street in East
Cambridge. I am a staff member at the Peabody School and treasurer
of the Cambridge Education Association. I will be speaking about City
Manager Agenda Item #1. I'm here tonight to speak on behalf of staff
members at the Peabody School. We urge the council to support the
manager's recommendation of $800,000 from Free Cash to Public
Investment Fund School Department Extraordinary Expenditures
account for building upgrades at the Peabody and Baldwin Schools.
We want our school to be healthy and mold free to ensure that staff,
students and the public can work and learn safely.
I wish to submit a petition from all 60 staff members assigned to the
Peabody PK-5 School urging the council to support it.
Also, we would like to request that we be included in any updates and
know the timeline for this repair to ensure that the problem will
addressed quickly and be completed before the start of the school year
in late August. Could the city council please supply the Peabody School
or myself with the contact information.
Thank you for allowing me to speak.

To the Honorable, the City Council:
I am hereby requesting the appropriation of $800,000 from Free Cash to the Public Investment
Fund School Department Extraordinary Expenditures account for building upgrades at the
Peabody Elementary School and the Baldwin Elementary School.
The Peabody and Baldwin school buildings saw a significant development of mold last summer.
During mold remediation at the two buildings this past fall, significant lengths of existing pipe
insulation had to be removed and in some cases upgraded. Also, as part of the review of the
mold issue at the Peabody School an engineering consultant determined that the air chiller for the
Peabody School was preventing the building from properly cooling and removing moist outside
air, thus contributing to an environment conducive to mold growth.
Funds will be used to seal façade openings and conduct a comprehensive external review of the
building's facades to determine if a more significant issue exists, as well as to continue the
insulation upgrades begun earlier in the school year. In addition, funds will be used to replace
the existing air chiller at the Peabody School.
As I noted at the recent Tobin School Roundtable, our $500 million commitment to our School
Building program would not limit our ongoing efforts to provide funding for school building
upgrades and repairs. During this fiscal year, the City Council approved a $4 million appropriation
for the Graham and Parks Roof project, as well as an additional $600,000 for the boiler and cooling
unit replacement at the Solomon Garage.
Very truly yours,
Lonia 8 barquale
