The Honorable, the City Council,
I am writing with respect to the City of Cambridge Community Development
Department’s request for permission for twenty-five (25) temporary banners
along Hampshire Street and Cambridge Street submitted via the Council’s June
3, 2019 agenda. We would like to propose the following amendments to the
request in response to the City Council’s discussion on June 3.
• The size of the banners will be reduced to a maximum of 24 inches x 48
inches to conform to the size limitation of 1,152 square inches.
• The banners are temporary. We request permission to have them installed
for a year (Spring 2019 to Spring 2020).
The banners are proposed as part of the Inman Square Improvement Project
construction mitigation efforts and are intended to provide a sense of liveliness
and identity to the Inman Square area during construction.
Artwork for the requested banners comes from Albertine Press, a local Inman
Square business. CDD’s economic development staff discussed the design with
the East Cambridge Business Association (ECBA) and with local businesses at
construction mitigation meetings and the construction mitigation workshop
held in January 2019. We expect to work with the East Cambridge Business
Association and local businesses to keep the identity of the Square fresh and
vibrant during the duration of construction and anticipate bringing forward
additional ideas including new banner requests in 2020.
We will also work with local businesses to investigate opportunities to
repurpose and/or reuse the banner materials. Thank you, in advance, for your
consideration.
Sincerely,
Iram Farooq
