Atachment A Hi everyone, Thank you for joining today, April 30. I am calling this meeting to order. The call of the meeting is as follows: This meeting is being audio and visually recorded. We will start with introductions and I will make a few remarks, and then we will hear from the City. Opening remarks Over the last year and half, the Community Development Department has worked very hard to take the Committee's and the Council's concerns about vacant storefronts into consideration. While our vacancy rate may be low, there is no doubt that vacant storefronts make an area less attractive to visit. We discussed the storefront vacancies best practices report, which showed us that vacancies in • Cambridge do not seem to have a single underlying cause, but are a combination of both site-specific and district-level factors, and therefore likely require a broad set of strategies as opposed to a single policy or program, some of which have already set into motion. I also know many of us are concerned about landlords who have large enough real estate portfolios that there are advantages of keeping their property vacant can outweigh the benefits of monthly rent from a tenant and some landlords are holding out for high-paying tenants that they can currently find. So today we will have an important discussion about implications of an ordinance to help perhaps combat some of this but it'll be important to think about our goals overall and whether any ordinance actually solves the problems we set out to achieve. With that I will ask the staff to present.
