June 28, 2019 Daniel Wolf, Neighborhood Planner Cambridge Community Development Department 344 Broadway Cambridge, MA 02139 cc: Mayor Marc McGovern/Cambridge City Council Police Commissioner Branville G. Bard, Jr. Chief Public Health Officer Claude-Alix Jacob RE: May 2019 Sacramento Field No-Dog Petition and Related Materials Attached to this letter are the following: - Color copies of a petition asserting that dogs be prohibited at Sacramento Field, a petition signed by 55 people within a 1-block radius of the field, signed on May 21 - May 31, 2019 (10 pages) - Petition Signer Profiles and Comments: A roster of the basic profiles of those who signed the petition with A roster of comments made by signers of the petition - Also attached is a document entitled "Human Diseases Can Be Transmitted by Dog Poop and Urine" - A 2-sided summary petition document with signer profiles and comments As a city administrator, it is your responsibility to incorporate these considerations into decision-making, and to see to it that these documents are retained for reference going forward. In conjunction, petition signers are to be apprised of your acknowledgement of receipt of the petition, and the summary petition document with signer profiles and comments is to be shared with them.
There has been a recurrent claim that letters pertaining to the concerns raised in the petition are lost, letters both emailed and hand delivered in meetings at the city Community Development office, and the concerns raised within those letters and meetings and the subsequent petition were excluded from the city's presentation at their meeting advocating off-leash dogs at Sacramento Field. This petition should halt the blind pro-dog predisposition of the city administrators and their indifference to the welfare of children and adults at Sacramento Field. This petition should also bring a halt to the practice among city administrators of marginalizing an individual opposing the presence of dogs there. Neither these persons nor their concerns are insubstantial, and it is incumbent on city administrators to reverse their orientation and conduct themselves accordingly. Administrators must also cease cultivating and exploiting fragmentation, and cease contriving ignorance of the petition signer concerns, 55 within a one-block radius. Anticipate that the many petition signers who object to the presence of dogs at Sacramento Field are aware of each other, are aware that you have been fully briefed, and will hold you and others briefed accountable. HUMAN DISEASES CAN BE TRANSMITTED BY DOG POOP AND URINE LONG INVISIBLE HALF-LIFE - Residue from dog waste, urine and feces, contains bacteriological contagions that remain active in the soil for months afterward (regardless of owner "clean up"), leaving illness-causing contagions to which children and others are susceptible HUMAN DISEASES TRANSMITTED BY DOG POOP FROM BACTERIA AND PARASITES FROM BACTERIA - Campylobacteriosis symptoms include diarrhea, cramping, abdominal pain, and fever. The illness typically lasts one week but for people with compromised immune systems, Campylobacter can spread to the bloodstream and result in a life-threatening infection. - E. Coli and other fecal coliforms live in the intestines of many animals. Certain strains can escape into the bloodstream, or cause stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever. For people with weakened immune systems, E.coli infection can result in death. - Salmonellosis is the most common bacterial infection transmitted to humans by other animals. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headache, vomiting, and diarrhea. - Yersiniosis is another bacterial disease that can cause intestinal infections in people. Yersinia can multiply in cold water, unlike many other bacteria and may be found in elevated numbers in ponds, puddles and lakes as they thaw in the spring. FROM PARASITES - Cyclospora infection usually incubates in the body for a week and then causes gastroenteritis that can wax and wane for over a month. - Cryptosporidium and Giardia microscopic parasites found in water. They can cause intestinal diseases (giardiasis or "beaver fever " and cryptosporidiosis). - Roundworm (including hookworm and whipworm) larva can migrate throughout the body to the brain, lungs, kidneys, liver, heart, or eyes. Roundworm larva can cause blindness. - Tapeworms can infect humans through the pores of their skin or by being ingested. They attach to the intestines and absorb nutrients from their host. source: Canadian Public Health Association, https://www.cpha.ca/human- diseases-transmitted-dog-poop
ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANT DISEASE IN DOGS THAT CAN BE TRANSMITTED TO HUMANS Antibiotic Resistant Bacterial Infections in Dogs "Antibiotic resistant bacterial infections are bacterial infections that are minimally or no longer responsive to commonly used antibiotics. In other words, these bacteria are resistant to antibiotics - they cannot be killed and their growth cannot be stopped.... These infections may also be passed to other pets or to humans. Antibiotic resistant bacterial infections most commonly affect the skin, the gastrointestinal tract, the urinary tract, or the respiratory tract."
