Pace Yourselves---
Subject:
Dear Councilors,
I wanted to drop you a note to say how much I appreciate your time and labor in representing all the citizens of
Cambridge in your deliberations. Looking at Cambridge holistically is difficult when particular
groups are clamoring at your door. I get that. But what you are deliberating is indeed city-wide so it needs careful thought.
I also want to suggest that it is OK to limit your deliberations to something more sensible than your 7-8 hr deliberations.
After 4-5 hrs, it seems that stamina or lack there of, can lead to diminished returns in sound judgement and thoughtful
discussion. The process has potential to devolve into a team sport where the goal is win at any cost- all or nothing.
Please allow for more breaks and if need be, another ordinance committee meeting. There is no shame in that.
The panic seems to be fanned by particular constituents and the election. If allowed to expire, the issue can be taken up
in the next session
with much of the work already done.
(unfortunate, some of you will not be there).
your judgement needs to be broader in anticipation of consequences or even solutions not yet considered.
pace yourselves. The election is not the only thing involved.
Sincerely,
Marilee Meyer
