City of Cambridge R-5 IN CITY COUNCIL January 27, 2020 COUNCILLOR SIMMONS MAYOR SIDDIQUI VICE MAYOR MALLON COUNCILLOR CARLONE COUNCILLOR MCGOVERN COUNCILLOR NOLAN COUNCILLOR SOBRINHO-WHEELER COUNCILLOR TOOMEY COUNCILLOR ZONDERVAN WHEREAS: The City Council was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of lifelong Cambridge resident Gloria Adkins on January 10, 2020; and WHEREAS: Gloria Estelle Adkins was born November 25, 1931 in Cambridge to the la Leon Phillips and Marion (Bowen) E Phillips, the youngest of siblings Eugene Leon, William, Ruth Spencer, and Delores Kelton; and WHEREAS: Gloria Adkins – or Glo, as she was affectionately called – was a proud lifelong Cantabrigian, graduating from the Webster School and Cambridge High and Latin, and she was also a lifelong member of Union Baptist Church; and WHEREAS: Gloria Adkins married Alfred Lawrence Adkins of Lake Wales, FL, on December 21, 1952, and she settled on Hayes Street, raising her family and residing there until her passing; and WHEREAS: Gloria Adkins was a long-time employee of Riverside Press and Orion Research, and following her retirement, Gloria and Alfred became the proprietors of Phil's Variety, a staple in the Coast/Cambridge community; and WHEREAS: Gloria Adkins played a vital role in raising her grandchildren, being wholly committed to her family, and she also loved traveling and visiting her children in other states, with one of her fondest memories being attending the inauguration of President Barack Obama with her girls; and WHEREAS: Gloria Adkins was an avid Boston sports fan, she loved shopping, sewing, and politics, and she was known for being both innovative and creative with her home decorating and gardening – activities she loved engaging in while being in daily contact with her children, cheering them on, offering them support, and offering up her love; and
WHEREAS: Gloria Adkins is survived by her children Lawrence, Marcia. Steven, Carolyn, a host of adopted children, her grandchildren Antwon, James, Sarcia, Isaac, Jasmine, Britney, and Breanna, her nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and a host of family and friends, and her memory shall forever be cherished by them all; now therefore be it RESOLVED: That the City Council formally go on record expressing its deepest condolences to the family of Gloria Adkins for their tremendous loss; and be it further RESOLVED: That the City Clerk be and hereby is requested to forward a suitably engrossed copy of this resolution to the family of Gloria Adkins on behalf of the entire City Council.
