The Honorable, Cambridge City Council,
I am writing on behalf of the Central Square Business Improvement District to request your support to install
(2) Banner campaigns along the Massachusetts Avenue corridor designed to celebrate Cambridge Historic
Black Trailblazers and the Taste of Camival.. Being the only Cultural District in the City of Cambridge we
recognize that it is our duty to celebrate our diverse community members. The Cambridge Black History
Project was created to illuminate Black Cantabrigians not yet honored or recognized by the city. The following
individuals will be illuminated by our putting their pictures and biographies on bookmarks that will be
distributed throughout the Cambridge School System and hopefully on pole banners throughout the District.
•Entrepreneur Henry Owens,
•Civil Rights Activist Gertrude Wright Morgan,
•Renowned Chef Leon West,
•The first Black Chief Magistrate in United States Judge Joyce London Alexander
•The First Black in the Broadcast Roy Allen
•The First Black Secret Service Agent Charles Leroy Gittens,
•Dean and Professor Elizabeth Rawlins
This initial phase of the project was developed, researched, financed and launched by a committee of dedicated
volunteers - organized by James Spencer. There are many more trailblazers who have made countless
contributions to our rich Cambridge history, whose stories have yet to be told, this is just the beginning.
Also as part of this banner request is support for the Taste of Carnival. An indoor community festival
elebrating the Caribbean and African Diaspora and offering a "taste" of what to expect at the annua
'aribbean festival in Cambridge. This family friendly event will showcase Caribbean culture an
pride and features cultural performances, Caribbean food vendors, arts & craft vendors, music,
dancing, a costume showcase, steel pan performances and demos, Caribbean pantomimes and
storytelling. The event will take place in the Central Square Cultural District with a proposed date of
Saturday, February 29, 2020, 12-7pm for 2 sessions: 12-3pm and 4-7pm at the Christian Life Center.
Thank you in advance for your support.
My Best,
Executive Director, CSBID
