The Honorable, Cambridge City Council,
The Central Square Business Improvement District is bringing together businesses to
safely and warmly welcome back visitors to Central Square. Under one unified voice
and message BID aims to create an atmosphere of positivity and safety in the face of
unprecedented challenges. Through bold color, helpful iconography, and a warm hello,
this campaign seeks to alert visitors that Central Square is ready to welcome them back
safely and is unified in the pursuit of adapting to our current situation in ways that will
preserve the vibrancy of our community and keep Central essential.
Color is the unifying language of our campaign. It acts as a consistent, visual signifier of
positivity, warmth and vibrancy during these unprecedented, difficult times. We chose
our shade of Positive Pink for its bold, but friendly demeanor. Its application across
Central Square will send a message to visitors and members of Central Square that
businesses are ready to welcome them back, and that they are unified in their
commitment to keeping Central Square vibrant, safe, and essential to the community.
Our application states the banners would have a flight period of mid-June through the
end of September, please be in contact with any questions or concerns. In addition to all
the application materials we have also attached the a summary of our Project Neighbor,
Hello Again campaign so you can see the banners are just one part of a larger
communication plan.
Thank you in advance for your support.
My Best,

Keeping Central Lively
in Vacancy
TAKING IT FORWARD
Paint the
Town Pink
People use city furniture and infrastructure as a
part of their daily experience. We wait for the
bus, we sit in the sunshine, we eat lunch on the
lawn on a nice day. This is not just desired but
essential. To help people weave themselves
back into the fabric of our community, we paint
the town pink. It is our color of safety, inclusion,
permission. Swathes of color (at 6'-0" socially
distant increments) give people a graphic
shorthand to understand where they can (and
cannot be) while extending the canvas of our
campaign throughout the district.
TAKING IT FORWARD
Murals
The murals are a wonderful opportunity for
collective healing in the neighborhood.
REVOLUTLONARY
Consider soliciting local artists to create
work in our brand colors around themes
healing, positivity and vibrancy.

ELEMENTS
Keeping Central
Lively in Vacancy
We know a lot of stores are having a hard time.
They may not be opening anytime soon-or
ever. But we want to send a message that even
in vacancy, we are a united, lively district. Vacant
storefronts become yet another extension of our
campaign-places for warm, welcoming
messages, for safety reminders, or for fun pops
of color and graphic, reinforcing our campaign.

ELEMENTS
Clarity Through
Consistency
With so much in flux, businesses are struggling to
communicate their adapted offerings to the public.
Many windows and doors are covered in an array
of improvised, ad-hoc signage. By providing
businesses with adaptable, but consistent signage
and a do-it-yourself communication kit, we set the
conditions for a more unified message, improving
clarity for patrons and lending an air of legitimacy
to stores' efforts.
