Awaiting Report 20-08 regarding traffic calming measures on Eustis Street
Date:
July 21, 2020
In response to Awaiting Report 20-8, dated February 3, 2020, regarding working with
neighbors in the vicinity of Eustis Street to implement traffic calming measures on this
street, we report the following.
The Community Development Department (CDD), the Traffic, Parking and Transportation
Department (TPT) and the Department of Public Works (DPW) have reviewed the request
for traffic calming measures and roadway repair on Eustis Street.
Typically, larger traffic calming infrastructure changes to streets are completed in
conjunction with other roadwork such as repaving, street and sidewalk reconstruction. At
this time no such roadway work is scheduled for Eustis Street. We have added the street to
the list of requests for traffic calming interventions and these serve as considerations when
developing the next Five-Year Plan for Street and Sidewalk Reconstruction. In the interim,
we will monitor traffic speeds and evaluate the potential for implementing traffic calming
measures when the street is scheduled for reconstruction.
Once reconstruction is scheduled, CDD staff will coordinate a community process prior to
construction to make sure neighborhood residents have the opportunity to participate in
the discussion of possible improvements to Eustis Street.
In the meantime, DPW will complete roadway patching on Eustis Street in early fall. The
work is being scheduled, recognizing the backlog that resulted from the construction
moratorium that was adopted to mitigate the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The goal of traffic calming is to reduce speeds on a street. In addition to the interventions
noted above, Eustis Street will also have its speed regulations reduced from 25 MPH to 20
MPH as part of a larger city-wide speed reduction program. This change is expected to be
implemented by early fall.
