City of Cambridge | Traffic, Parking, and Transportation | August 10, 2020 • Sidewalks and bike lanes are not wide enough to allow people to stay 6 feet apart • People still need to be able to walk and bike to destinations across the City • Quick implementation allows us to respond to changing conditions, including weather • Many other cities are implementing similar programs in response to COVID-19
City of Cambridge | Traffic, Parking, and Transportation | August 10, 2020 • Shared Streets were implemented in response to a City Council Policy Order passed on April 27 • First webinar held on June 25 • Pilot Program implemented on June 26 • We’ve heard feedback from residents in every neighborhood, and have made additional changes since implementation • Second webinar held on August 4 • Recordings available at camb.ma/covid19-streets

City of Cambridge | Traffic, Parking, and Transportation | August 10, 2020 • Selection process began with review public input • Streets were selected that provide connections to key destinations (grocery stores, City facilities, open space, etc.) • Worked to create a connected network • We did not include streets with MBTA buses • Looked for streets that have a reasonable alternative route • Did not select streets that are one block long except where they serve as a connection to longer streets in the network
