WHEREAS:
The City of Cambridge recognizes the value of swimming and other aquatic activities,
which support both physical and mental well-being and contribute to overall quality
of life; and
WHEREAS:
Drowning remains the leading cause of death among children ages 1 to 4 and is the
second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children through age 14
in the United States, impacting not only those directly involved but also families, first
responders, and healthcare systems across the community; and
WHEREAS:
The Cambridge Public Health Department and the Department of Human Service
Programs, through its Recreation Division, provide educational resources on water
safety, and the War Memorial Recreation Center offers year-round swimming lessons
for residents of all ages; and
WHEREAS:
Continued public education on pool and spa safety, supported by the recreational
water industry and organizations participating in the National Water Safety Month
Coalition, plays an important role in preventing drowning and other water-related
injuries; now therefore be it
ORDERED:
That the Cambridge City Council hereby recognizes May as National Water Safety
Month and encourages all residents, particularly parents and caregivers, to learn about
and practice water safety in order to reduce the risk of water-related accidents.
