RES 2026-93 FIRST IN COUNCIL June 1, 2026 City of Cambridge MAYOR SIDDIQUI WHEREAS: Michael Rowell, Supervisor of Alternator Operations at the Plasma Science Fusion Center, is retiring on June 1, 2026, after a remarkable 45-year career of employment at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and WHEREAS: Michael Rowell started his career at MIT as a staff electrician before moving on to run engineering operations at the Plasma Science Fusion Center; and WHEREAS: In addition to his work responsibilities, Michael pursued his Associate’s Degree in Engineering from Wentworth Institute of Technology while supporting his two children, Michelle and Lisa, alongside his long-time partner, Cheryle Clemente; and WHEREAS: Michael often made the more than two-hour commute each way between Cambridge and his home in Plymouth, and throughout his career has embraced the MIT and Cambridge communities by supporting staff and students alike and fostering intellectual curiosity through his expertise, mentorship, and dedication; and WHEREAS: Michael has been a gift to the MIT community and will leave a lasting mark on all who had the privilege of working alongside him; now therefore be it RESOLVED: That the City Council go on record thanking Michael Rowell for his many years of service to the City of Cambridge and MIT and wishing him a happy retirement; and be it further RESOLVED: That the City Clerk be and hereby is requested to forward a suitably engrossed copy of this resolution to Michael Rowell on behalf of the entire City Council.
