City Council support of the SEIU 32BJ facilities workers at MIT and their efforts to secure a fair contract

POR 2026-149 FIRST IN COUNCIL August 3, 2026 City of Cambridge COUNCILLOR SIMMONS COUNCILLOR MCGOVERN COUNCILLOR SOBRINHO-WHEELER WHEREAS: Facilities workers represented by SEIU 32BJ perform essential work throughout the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as custodians, grounds workers, desk associates, and skilled tradespeople; and WHEREAS: SEIU 32BJ and MIT are currently negotiating a successor collective bargaining agreement, seeking fair wage increases, more affordable healthcare, protections for immigrant workers, and strong union benefits; and WHEREAS: As one of Cambridge’s largest employers, MIT has an important role in promoting fair labor standards and constructive labor relations; now therefore be it ORDERED: That the Cambridge City Council go on record in support of the SEIU 32BJ facilities workers at MIT and their efforts to secure a fair contract; and be it further ORDERED: That the City Council respectfully urge MIT to reach a fair and timely agreement that provides family-sustaining wages, affordable healthcare, strong benefits, and appropriate workplace protections; and be it further ORDERED: That the City Clerk be and hereby is requested to forward a suitably engrossed copy of this Policy Order to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, Provost Anantha P. Chandrakasan, Chancellor Melissa Nobles, Executive Vice President and Treasurer Glen Shor, and SEIU 32BJ on behalf of the entire City Council. A true copy; ATTEST:- Paula M. Crane, Interim City Clerk
