Resolution on the death of Dr. Charles B. Millstein.

RES 2026-103 FIRST IN COUNCIL August 3, 2026 City of Cambridge COUNCILLOR MCGOVERN WHEREAS: The City Council was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Charles B. Millstein, a respected endodontist, educator, dental historian, veteran, and lifelong son of Cambridge, who passed away on June 21, 2026; and WHEREAS: Dr. Millstein was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, partner, mentor, colleague, and friend whose kindness, generosity, and warmth touched countless lives; and WHEREAS: Born in Cambridge in 1936 to a first-generation American family, Dr. Millstein dedicated his life to learning and service, graduating from Brandeis University, earning his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, completing advanced specialty training at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, later earning a Master of Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health, and continuing to pursue knowledge throughout his life and career; and WHEREAS: Following his service as a Captain in the United States Air Force, Dr. Millstein established a private endodontic practice in Cambridge, where for decades he provided exceptional and compassionate care to generations of patients, while also serving for many years at Harvard University Health Services, caring for members of the Harvard community and earning the respect and gratitude of patients and colleagues alike; and WHEREAS: A passionate educator and scholar, Dr. Millstein served on the faculty of Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, preserving and sharing the history of dentistry through his teaching, research, publications, and oral history interviews, while also supporting dental education and improving access to care throughout the Caribbean and Latin America through his work with the Massachusetts Hispanic Dental Association; and WHEREAS: Dr. Millstein was one of Cambridge's great ambassadors, spending nine years welcoming visitors from around the world as a dedicated volunteer at the Cambridge Visitor Information Center in Harvard Square, where his remarkable knowledge of local history, genuine kindness, and deep love for the city enriched every conversation, while also generously volunteering at the Harvard Museum of Natural History and sharing his lifelong curiosity and enthusiasm for learning with visitors of all ages; and WHEREAS: Known for his sharp wit, intellectual curiosity, and generous spirit, Dr. Millstein found joy in aviation, travel, history, and sharing his knowledge with others, leaving

behind countless "Charlie stories" and a legacy of compassion, service, and friendship that will continue to live on through his family, students, patients, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him; now therefore be it RESOLVED: That the City Council go on record expressing its deepest condolences to the family of Dr. Charles B. Millstein for their tremendous loss; and be it further RESOLVED: That the City Clerk be and hereby is requested to forward a suitably engrossed copy of this resolution to the family of Dr. Charles B.
