Resolution on the death of Mallory Slate.

RES 2026-113 FIRST IN COUNCIL August 3, 2026 City of Cambridge COUNCILLOR NOLAN COUNCILLOR MCGOVERN WHEREAS: The City Council was saddened to learn of the death of Mallory H. Slate, longtime Cambridge resident and business owner, on July 7, 2026, at age 88; and WHEREAS: Mallory was born in Boston and raised in Woburn, MA, and after high school in Cambridge at Browne and Nichols, Mallory enlisted in the U.S. Army, studied Russian at the Monterey Army Language School, and was subsequently stationed in Germany during the early years of the Cold War, serving in military intelligence to monitor Soviet tank movements and communications; and WHEREAS: Mallory worked in documentary filmmaking, and lived in New York and San Francisco before earning a degree in Russian literature from Boston University, and moving to Cambridge where he and his beloved wife, Ylva, made their home for more than 40 years; and WHEREAS: Bob Slate Stationer was founded in Harvard Square in 1930 by Mallory’s father, and was a long-time and valued member of the Harvard Square Business Association; and WHEREAS: Mallory Slate and his brother, Justin, together built on the family legacy and ran the business for nearly 50 years, building a reliable brand based on careful curation, professionalism and unparalleled community spirit; and WHEREAS: Sadly, in 2011, the business closed, but like a phoenix rising from the ashes, a long- time customer reached out to the brothers to purchase the brand name; Mallory was particularly helpful, guiding the process and protecting the brand that had been so carefully cultivated and lovingly managed and continues to grace Harvard Square through today; and WHEREAS: Mal was a long-time member of the Rotary Club of Cambridge, actively participating in the Rotary’s annual “Chalk on the Walk” fundraiser and its annual Salvation Army Holiday party for unhoused and home insecure children and their families; and WHEREAS: He liked to talk politics, current events and sought out the very best in everyone he met; he was well-read and well fed; often riding his motorcycle way too fast in search of the biggest and most delicious breakfasts in New England; and WHEREAS: Mallory is survived by his wife, Ylva; his daughter, Ursula, of Lyme, NH, her husband, Mark, and their daughters, Greta and Elsa; his son, Björn, of Lincoln, MA,

and his wife, Olivia, and Björn's two children, Henry and Lucy; his brother, Justin, of Cohasset, MA, and Justin's two children, Jessica and Jonathan; and WHEREAS: He will be remembered for being a charming member of Yankee Beemers BMW motorcycle club, for the welcoming twinkle in his eyes, the ever-present smile on his face and his heart of gold; now therefore be it RESOLVED: That this City Council go on record expressing its deepest condolences to the family of Mallory Slate, for their tremendous loss; and be it further RESOLVED: That the City Clerk be and hereby is requested to forward a suitably engrossed copy of this resolution to the family of Mallory Slate on behalf of the entire City Council.
