A communication transmitted from Yi-An Huang, City Manager, relative to Awaiting Report Item Number 26-37, which requested that the City Manager work with the Mayor’s Office, Law Department, Election Commission, and other relevant City departments to engage the Collins Center in reviewing policy options for allowing Cambridge voters to directly elect the City’s Mayor.

CMA 2026-239 IN CITY COUNCIL September 14, 2026 To the Honorable, the City Council: I am writing in response to Awaiting Report #26-37, which requested that the City Manager work with the Mayor’s Office, Law Department, Election Commission, and other relevant City departments to engage the Collins Center in reviewing policy options for allowing Cambridge voters to directly elect the City’s Mayor. Following the Council’s request, the City has entered into an agreement with the Collins Center to support this work, and initial efforts are already underway. The Collins Center has begun engaging directly with individual Councillors and is also initiating its planning process to coordinate with appropriate City staff.
