POR 2026-161 FIRST IN COUNCIL September 14, 2026 City of Cambridge COUNCILLOR SOBRINHO-WHEELER COUNCILLOR MCGOVERN COUNCILLOR AL-ZUBI MAYOR SIDDIQUI WHEREAS: September is recognized globally as the 16th annual National Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP) Awareness Month; and WHEREAS: ITP is a rare autoimmune blood disorder in which the immune system attacks and destroys platelets, increasing the risk of mild bruising to serious bleeding episodes, affecting 4 in 100,000 children and 3 in 100,000 adults in the United States; and WHEREAS: Children and adults living with ITP need to lead much more cautious lives, avoiding activities that increase the risk of injury and bleeding; and WHEREAS: Friday, September 25, 2026 marks this year’s I Sport Purple for Platelets! Day, led by the Platelet Disorder Support Association, the leading nonprofit dedicated to education, advocacy, support, and research for people affected by ITP; now therefore be it ORDERED: That the City Manager be and hereby is requested to direct the relevant staff to light Cambridge City Hall in purple in recognition of this year’s I Sport Purple for Platelets! Day, reflecting the spontaneous and often unexplained bruising that is a hallmark of ITP, and symbolizing the strength, resilience, and hope of patients, caregivers, and advocates working together to raise awareness and improve lives, in support of patients and families in Cambridge and around the world participating in this awareness campaign; and be it further ORDERED: That the City Clerk be and hereby is requested to forward a suitably engrossed copy of this Policy Order to the Platelet Disorder Support Association on behalf of the entire City Council.
