Subject: Awaiting Report 2026-08: Speed Humps on Fayerweather Street
In response to awaiting report 2026-08 requesting that the City Manager direct the appropriate City departments, including the Department of Transportation, to evaluate and install a series of speed humps along Fayerweather Street, with particular attention to the stretch between Walnut Street and Field Street, we report the following: In the fall of 2025, the City installed the first 9 speed humps at 5 locations as part of our initial pilot season of speed hump installations. While formal evaluations of the first round of speed humps have not been completed yet, we anticipate continuing with installations in the program. The first round of installations included:
Dover Street – 1 speed hump between the City Line and Mass Ave
Lakeview Avenue – 2 speed humps between Malcolm Rd and Worthington St
Field Street and Garden Street (near Universal Playground) – 3 speed humps- Field St (2 speed humps) between Fern St and Alpine St and Garden Street near Alpine Street (1 speed hump)
Reservoir Street – 1 speed hump between Huron Ave and Vassal Lane
Walden Street – 2 speed humps between Vassal Lane and Concord Ave
In the coming construction season, we plan to install 25 additional speed humps. Since the program was announced, we have received 400 requests for speed humps at 133 separate locations. We will be evaluating these requests based on various criteria including: traffic data (vehicle speeds and volumes); street width and grade; proximity to schools, hospitals and other sensitive land uses; crash history; part of a primary or secondary emergency response route. We will evaluate the request for this location on Fayerweather Street between Walden Street and Field Street as part of this process.
