The City Council was deeply saddened at learning of the death of CVS founder Ralph Pratt Hoagland III on January 17, 2020; and

Ralph was born on August 1, 1933 and was the fourth of the six children of the late Ralph Jr., a retail and wholesale druggist, and Mary; and

Ralph was a survivor of a life-threatening childhood illness and was able to make a full recovery due to the excellent care he received at Boston’s Children Hospital; and

Ralph was the distinguished graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Business School where he conceived and founded CVS; and

Along with cofounding CVS, Hoagland launched many other businesses including the Orson Welles Cinema, memorable restaurants such as the Paris 26 restaurant in Newton and the 33 Dunster restaurant off Harvard Square, 24-hour stores and the 1001 Plays Arcade in Cambridge; and

Ralph was a fierce civil rights activist who had been inspired by the early speeches of the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. and helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars in support of the black community; and

Ralph will long be remembered for his entrepreneurial, generous and philanthropic spirt; and

Ralph’s passing will leave a void in the lives of all his surviving family; his beloved wife of sixty-one years Molly; his dear brother Peter; his cherished sister Carol; his loving children Peter, Larry, and Eric; his beloved grandchildren Mark, Sally and Joshua; and many other loving relatives and friends; and

Ralph will be sorely missed by all he touched and loved; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the City Council go on record extending its deepest sympathy for the family of Ralph Hoagland III at this time of such personal loss; and be it further

RESOLVED: That the City Clerk be and hereby is requested to forward a suitably engrossed copy of this resolution to the Hoagland family on behalf of the entire City Council.
