| Re | Awaiting Report 16-25 – Traffic Calming and Safety Improvements at the Intersection of Bristol Street and Webster Avenue Awaiting Report 16-30 – Traffic Calming Improvements at the Intersection of Lincoln Street and Windsor Street |
This memo is in response to Policy Orders 7 and 20 from the April 4, 2016 City Council Meeting (Awaiting Reports 16-25 and 16-30), requesting that the City Manager confer with appropriate staff from our departments to determine if there are traffic calming and/or safety improvements possible at the intersections of Bristol Street/Webster Avenue and Lincoln Street/Windsor Street, respectively.
The recently updated Five Year Sidewalk and Street Reconstruction Plan (available at www.cambridgema.gov/theworks/fiveyearplan) includes the segment of Webster Avenue from Hampshire Street to Lincoln Street in the Wellington-Harrington neighborhood, as a project to be constructed in Fiscal Year 2018 (see attached map for the Five Year Plan). As part of this capital construction project, the City will undertake a community outreach process to develop plans for the improvements that will take place. These discussions will include potential traffic calming and safety improvements, along with reconstruction of pedestrian ramps that are not in compliance with current accessibility laws, regulations, and standards. The limits of this project currently include the intersection of Bristol Street and Webster Avenue, and we have determined that we can also include the intersection of Lincoln Street and Windsor Street, which is immediately adjacent to the current northern limit of the project area. Though this process, we expect to be able to address many of the community’s concerns regarding safety, traffic operations, and pedestrian accessibility at these two intersections.
