ReAwaiting Report 16-4 – Improving the Traffic Situation on Gore Street

This memo is in response to Order 7 from the January 11, 2016 City Council Meeting (Awaiting Report 16-4), requesting that the Traffic, Parking, and Transportation and Police Departments coordinate on the development of potential improvements to the traffic situation on Gore Street, specifically in the vicinity of Fifth Street.

In response to this request, the Police Department has conducted an ongoing enforcement campaign at this location over the last two weeks, and will continue to perform enforcement at this location in the future. Enforcement activities focused particularly on stop sign and truck violations, based on the complaints that have been received in this area. As a result of this enforcement, which occurred at various times during the day and first half shifts, the following citations were issued:  Six citations for failure to stop at a stop sign; these violations occurred at Third Street and Sciarappa Street.  Two citations for equipment violations and failure to inspect.

No violations involving trucks or commercial vehicles were observed during this time.

In parallel with these enforcement efforts, the Traffic, Parking, and Transportation Department conducted a site inspection of this location, to confirm all of the necessary signage was in place and determine if any additional engineering measures could be taken to address this situation. Based on this site visit, we determined that all of the required signs are correctly installed, and we were not able to identify any additional signs, pavement markings, or other measures that are likely to improve safety and operations at this location. However, both departments will continue to monitor this location to attempt to improve traffic operations and safety through both enforcement and engineering.
