Awaiting Report #0-4, dated May 7, 2018 Re: Increase enforcement of speed limits on Windsor Street Dear Sir:

The purpose of this response is to address Awaiting Report #0-4, dated May 7, 2018, whereby it was requested that the Cambridge Police Department increase enforcement of speed limits on Windsor Street and report back to the City Council in a timely manner.

The Traffic Unit has conducted the following activity in response to this order:

  • Lieutenant Riley has been in contact with Karen Burns, Chief Transportation Officer for Bus Operations with the MBTA regarding resident concerns about speeding. She is sending out notification to all drivers to remind them of the posted speed limit.
  • Traffic officers spoke directly with MBTA drivers on the route and reminded them of the posted speed limit. No drivers were found exceeding the speed limit by more than 2-3 MPH.
  • Speed enforcement was conducted at 7 different times resulting in one citation. Most vehicles were found to be travelling within 2-3 miles of the speed limit.
  • One resident approached the officers and stated that she believed school buses were more of an issue than MBTA buses. Based on this conversation, Safety Officer Carlos Figueroa spoke with Tina Fisher, Transportation Supervisor for the Cambridge Public Schools and asked her to remind drivers of the posted speed limit.
  • The department has placed a speed measurement trailer on the segment of Windsor closest to Cambridge Street. The trailer will stay in place for 2-3 weeks. During this time, officers from the Traffic Unit will continue to conduct speed enforcement on Windsor Street. ADDRESS ALL COMMUNICATIONS TO 125 SIXTH STREET, CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS 02142

We will continue to review the data collected to discover trends and identify areas requiring adjustments.
