The Manager's report back on increasing traffic monitoring at the intersection of Prospect Street and Broadway during morning rush hour

Awaiting Report 19-47 Re: Increasing Traffic Monitoring Resources – Prospect and Broadway Dear Sir:

The purpose of this response is to address Awaiting Report 19-47, whereby it was requested that the Cambridge Police Department increase traffic monitoring resources at the intersection of Prospect and Broadway during morning rush hour.

The Traffic Unit will be implementing the following actions in response to this order:  Beginning on Monday, May 13th there will be two officers from the Traffic Unit assigned to the intersection of Prospect Street and Broadway between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. each weekday morning until the end of May.  Officers will be directed to issue citations or warnings as appropriate with an emphasis on red light and crosswalk violations.  On-duty Traffic Unit personnel will also conduct periodic enforcement and education assignments at other times during the day.  The department is currently utilizing funds awarded by the MA Highway Safety Division under the Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program and the Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety program. Enforcement activity under these grants will be included in the rotation of previously identified locations of concern to supplement our on-duty personnel.  Officers will make a daily report on their activity and observations, and this information will be incorporated into a summary report at the end of the month so that the Traffic Lieutenant can complete a trend analysis, and identify areas requiring adjustments. Any observations made related to signal timing, signage, lane markings or other infrastructure issues will also be shared with Traffic, Parking and Transportation.
