The Manager's report back on adding a cybercrime assessment section to the list of monthly BridgeStat reports

Awaiting Report #19-60, dated May 13, 2019 Re: Adding a cybercrime assessment section to the list of monthly BridgeStat reports The purpose of this response is to address Awaiting Report #19-60, dated May 13, 2019, whereby the City Manager was requested to confer with the Cambridge Police Department on adding a cybercrime assessment section to the list of monthly BridgeStat reports or, alternatively, create a separate report to help formalize the information flow about cybercrime to the same level as the currently used BridgeStat.

We have taken the following measures in response to this order: - Effective August 1st we will incorporate a dedicated CyberCrime page/section to the department’s monthly BridgeStat report. The data will capture the top cybercrime threats and trends (including phishing, identify theft, cyberstalking, etc.). - Additionally, we plan to include a link to the Identify Theft Prevention page of the CPD website that includes information on how to protect yourself from identity theft, key resource information, and contact information to the Cambridge Police Electronic Crimes Task Force.

We will continue to encourage residents to report computer, internet-related, or intellectual property crime to the police department to help victims understand what has happened to them; direct them to assistance; and facilitate the sharing of criminal activity and their indicators across government and law enforcement agencies.

Additionally, educating the public on cyber security and potential threats is a key aspect of any prevention strategy, so we will continue to develop educational materials and public awareness campaigns.
