The item's path through the council, every recorded step. How the request pipeline works
This memo is in response to Order #11 from the September 9, 2019 City Council Meeting (Awaiting Report 19-110) requesting that we install additional safety measures at the intersection of Fayette Street and Cambridge Street to reduce conflicts between people walking and people driving vehicles. We have also directly received emails expressing concerns about conflicts at this location.
Based on this request and the emails we have received, we recently installed a centerline pedestrian crossing sign on Cambridge Street at Fayette Street to better indicate the crosswalk at this location and improve yielding behavior. In addition, by locating a physical object at this location, drivers making the left turn from Fayette Street to Cambridge Street westbound are required to turn more slowly and pay greater attention as they turn, which should also benefit people crossing the street.
We have also worked with the contractor for the Inman Square Intersection Improvements Project to have them maintain the sign and ensure that it remains in the correct position at the crosswalk. We will continue to monitor this location going forward to determine if any additional safety measures are needed, particularly as the street construction in Inman Square is proceeding.
